Hey Guys. I've been looking for a good turtorial on how to mix RAP vocals. But I ended up with nothing. However, if you teach me the way you mix your RAP vocals and I like it. I will teach you how to get your RNB songs to sound like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..raat2osJPQ

By the way, I use Adobe Audition/Cool Edit Pro (And I've got the Waves Diamond Bundle)

just mess around with your reverb

i use mixcraft but my settings are similar to this:

SIZE (m2): between 5 and 10 (this is what adds the actual reverb…..the empty space feeling)

DAMPING: max

PREDELAY (ms): depends on if you want a harmonic feel, i usually keep it between -60 and -30

HI DAMP: max

LO CUT (hz): between 45 and 65

EARLY REF (dB): keep it at 0

MIX: about 1.5, just so it doesnt wash out my voice and make it sound too recorded

LEVEL (dB): i keep this pretty high, the max is 10 but the least ill leave this at is 6

it really depends on the beat tho (i change my settings in every song)

VOCALS NEED TO BE COMPRESSED, EQ'D, AND USUALLY NEED TURNING DOWN TO SIT IN A MIX… I KNOW EVERYONE HAS THERE OWN WAY OF DOING THINGS AND THAT EVERY SONG NEEDS DIFFERENT THINGS BUT IF YOU STICK TO THIS WILL AT LEAST HAVE A SOME WHAT RELIABLE BASE FOR YOUR MIX…

START BY GETTING A CLEAR RECORDING WITH NO BACKGROUND NOISE… <<< KEY

COMPRESS THE VOCAL AT A HIGH KNEE AT A RATE OF 3-1 OR 4-1 (PRE-VEIW IT FIRST) UNTILL THE VOCALS ARE LEVEL BUT STILL SOUND FULL OF LIFE… IF YOUR RECORDING HAS BACK GROUND NOISE YOU WILL NOW HEAR IT!! WHY NUMBER 1 IS KEY…

EQ THE VOCAL… SET A LOW PASS FILTER AT A PLACE INBETWEEN 100 AND 200 HZ SO TO HOPEFULLY ROLL OFF ANY LOW SIBILANCE, PLOSIVES, AND LOW END AIR THAT COULD MUD THE LOWS IN THE BEAT… ADD SOME ENERGY AT THE REMAINING LOW, MID, AND HIGH END TO FILL THE VOCAL OUT AND MAKE IT SOUND MORE LIFE LIKE.

NOW YOU CAN ADJUST VOLUMES UNTIL YOUR MIX IS CONSISTANT AND CLEAR AND START ADDING YOUR REVERBS, DELEYS, AND OTHER EFFECTS TO YOUR MIX MORE ACCURATLY… REMEMBER A LIL CAN GO A LONG WAY… DON'T RUIN A GOOD MIX WITH 2 MUCH REVERB OR DELAY…

MOST IMPORTANTLY DON'T BE SCARED TO TURN DOWN THE BEAT TO ACHEIVE THE BLEND YOU WANT IN YOUR MIX YOU CAN ALWAYS TURN THE WHOLE MIX UP LATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
