Hi there, Sho-Down. I stumbled on this site by accident but this is a wonderful place! I’m asking for a lil’ help here, especially from you Sho-Down. So here’s the thing. I’m producing mostly rock, punk, stuff like this, but these days someone asked me to make a soul track, r&b-ish sort of track. And after listening to your work, i realised those are the drums the guy was referring to. I need a helping hand from you, buddy. Would you mind telling me how you process your drums? This is a kinda new territory for me, that type of sound. So anything you’re willing to tell me about your drums would sure be great helping me find a starting point. Hope you’re cool with that! Thanks in advance! Keep doing your great work! Cheers, Tony.
I use a program called Fruity Loops to sequence my drums, you just click in the drums on it. Slower R&B tracks are around 60-80 tempo or you could double that up to 120-140, faster tracks like Beyonce’s stuff are 100-110. Might help to try and mimic the drum patterns of R&B songs on the radio or beats from my site just to give you an idea.
You’ll probably need some drum sounds, the hollow rock’ish drums you use won’t work that great for R&B/Soul style music. I’ve got a drum kit for sale in the Store section of the site if you’re interested or you could probably find some freebies on Google to get you started.
Not sure exactly what you were asking though so if I didn’t answer your question just let me know lol
Hi again. Thank you for the reply! Well actually i was wondering how you process the drums. They sound so much more ‘urban’ than anything i’ve been listening to from sample cds or even drum vsti. That’s what stroke me in the first place, the sound of your drums, it’s really hot. And i was thinking there must be something you apply to them, becuz none of the drums from sample libs sound THIS tight!
Could you tell me what plugins you use to process the drums? I don’t know if i’m making myself very clear, maybe i’m not putting it right… Sorry if that’s the case.
maybe this will help if your wanting to change the samples from more rockish to more of a pop feel for an rnb track..
try using some light reverb (nothing shakey) and an exciter over the snare or clap and see if you can find a similar feel to what you are looking for.
the kicks again some reverb or maybe a waves maxxbass or one of there other bass manipulators. Or try adding some sounds over the kicks (layering) till you get the sound that you want from that kick… of course they would have to be about the same tempo and length..
other than that I can recomend best service drums overkill if you can find a version other than the vst…. like the wave files themselves and either change the samples to fit the mood ect…. or just layer and use as is…. the rockit drumkit is a good investment and so is the one i mentioned (25000+ drum samples for various hip hop rnb and pop genres…
