Duce up to all the producers out there and the man Sho-Down for puttin it down for all of us. I have a question for u Sho-Down, i see that some of your beats tempos are really high like 160s and 150s and stuff, how do you make the tempo that high but lay down the drum pattern and make it seem like its playing at a tempo of lets say 90, like do you change the time signature, or do you spread out the drums. Thanks a lot mang. Stay up

well, i think i could answer that question for you homie, ’cause i do it in my own beats as well. you actually already know the answer, ’cause you answered it in your question…lol!

the trick is to spread your drums out, like your kick and your snares/claps further apart from each other than you normally would. it’s a little tricky at first, but once you get used to it, you’ll figure it out quickly.

it’s really like double-time patterns, or in other words, if i have a beat say at 174 BPM, if we divide that number by 2 (174/2), you’ll get 87. so, even though the beat is at 174 BPM it "feels" as if it’s at 87 BPM. you have to go more by the "feel" of the drums and the rhythm (the pulse of the beat). and by doing this, you can create some vicious, head-noddin’ drum patterns!

and another trick is this: you can do this same thing in reverse! like make a beat in an extremely slow tempo, like say 50 BPM. and if you squeeze the drums closer than usual, it will sound 2x faster (50 BPM x 2). so, it will sound and "feel" like it’s actually at 100 BPM!

 - For super fast tempos over 120 BPM, if you want to make them sound or "feel" twice as slow, spread your drums out further.

 - For super slow tempos under 60 BPM, if you want to make them sound or "feel" twice as fast, then squeeze your drums much closer than you normally would.

i hope this helps you out man. hey sho — make this a sticky!

^ yep

In Fruity Loops I usually use two patterns at 8 beats per bar, so if a beat is 160 BPM I’d only have 2 snares per pattern with the kicks spread out, if the beat is 80 BPM I’d have 4 snares and more kicks.

Look at Usher’s "Love In This Club" track, I’m working on a remix for it at 69 BPM but Polo probably made the beat at 138 (double the speed). So all you gotta do is spread the drums out.

Yep, I do the same with all my beats.  It makes placing drums easier and also allows to roll hi-hats nicely.
