And how much louder do you put your kits and snares from the rest of the tracks before you drop tha L2.

IN cool edit does the DB meter go in the red before you use L2.

Don’t let the DB meter go into the red… keep it light orange at most… if your sounds are in the red, it’s cutting itself out, thus losing that thump or snap you’re looking for…

Also, when putting drum sounds together, it’s a good idea to layer kicks and snares… depending on what kind of kick/snare you want, layer 2 to 3 of them on top of each other… mess with the volume levels a bit and your drums will sound a lot better…

I also suggest exporting a WAV of your drum loop to hear what it sounds like on CD, in your stereo, or car system… it’s one of those fine tuning things I do ;)

All my drum sounds come from the Rock It Pro Drum Kit Vol. 1 in the store section of the site. I always layer snares, maybe 3-4 snares and sometimes I’ll layer the kicks, 2 or 3. I don’t do ANY special mixing on drums or sounds because I don’t have the slightest clue when it comes to mixing or compression.

When I switched over to vsts it seems my beats are never loud enough, I don’t know if my ears are tired after making the beat or what but when I send each part from FL to Cool Edit Pro the volume seems like it goes down.

So when I’ve got the beat parts in Cool Edit I up the volume of each track by 3 or 4. Then I run the full mixed beat into Waves L2, and if something sounds too loud I’ll turn that part down and send it through L2 again. Just gotta use your ears, step away, go have a smoke and then play the beat again. Panning parts of the beat helps too.

And yea, the beat is hitting in the red before I put it into L2. If I don’t let it hit in the red the beat is way too low, I  don’t really pay attention to levels or anything, if it sounds bad on my monitors I turn it down.

Here’s my Waves L2 settings if you wanted to know:

actally l2 is meant for things hitting in the red… and it is a compressor lol!!! It’s just a limiting compressor it keeps the sound as loud as possible with out letting it peak or go into the red… also i’ve noticed that with fl8 using various good vst’s that are production ready and don’t need alot of tweaking that you can tune stuff on fl arrangments and don’t even need to use limiters anymore you just have to use your ears… a good sample and a good sound with the right ears beats compression ect anyday
